Chapter 1 · Into the Dragon's Land
The World on a string minus the veggies
11 November 2010
A few days before I hopped on a plane, a dear friend has surprised me with a gift. She presented me with a little red pouch that contained a silver world with copper continents and a Tibettan chime in it......This amulet was given to her by her husband nearly 40 years ago to keep her dreams of world journeys close to her heart. And now they both passed it on to me.
I felt like a piece of me has returned home - like this World-on-a-string represented their love for me on the journey, and wherever I went, I'd be safe. A feeling of transcendent peace has visited me when I put it on. The silver chime landed perfectly on my heart. My friend bid me to ring it in all the "beyond-words" places/moments.
And ring it I did for the first time at the top of the Peak Tram over the Hong-Kong harbour. The sky scrapers piercing the evening fog, spreading the mystical glow over the water.....all the white noise of the city laying down below....and me watching the silent glowing urban mirage. The moment was truly magical.
I've learned that HK puts on a light show every night at 8 PM - if one takes a ferry to Tsim Cha Tsui [I've actually learned to pronounce that and can do it 10 times fast!] and looks out at the city front across the harbor, it's quite a sight!
